What if you Don't Qualify?

If you do not qualify for financial assistance, don't give up! College Center can help you develop the following options:

• Look for employment during the summer, and save your money.

• When you are accepted by a college, call the Student Employment Office and seek advice and assistance in finding a job when you arrive at the college.

• Explore the opportunities for merit scholarships, both at the college and locally. College Center can help too.

• Consider applying for financial aid if you are at the margin of qualifying for aid. This could permit you to make application for an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

• Suggest to your parents that they consider a PLUS Loan or one of the many other alternative loan programs. College Center has information and contact numbers.

• Suggest to your parents that they consider talking to a financial adviser or tax accountant about ways to utilize family resources for college expenses. Consider co-signing a loan with them that you would assume responsibility for, once you have found employment after college.

• Consider accelerating your course of study at college, so that you could finish school in three to three and one half years. Remember that not only do you save a year's tuition, you also enter the work force sooner and make an additional amount as salary (minus living expenses).

• Explore the schools that offer a cooperative education program that would enable you to work in your field of interest, while attending college.
