Making Your Essay Work for You
Here are some tips for preparing to write your essay:
-
Think about your topic early. Five or six weeks before your application is due, jot down some possible topics for your essay. Discuss how you might present those topics, with your parents, your teachers, or friends. Don't be discouraged if your proposed topics sound similar to those of other applicants. Remember that everyone is different, and your honesty and ability to make your points vividly may be all the edge you need.
-
Think about several topics. Entertain several topics for your essay in the early stages. Outline each topic. Write drafts. Re-read your drafts, placing yourself in the position of an admissions officer. Which topic sounds more convincing and interesting?
-
Write often. With the benefit of the computer, you can go through several drafts of essays before making your final choice. In the writing process it is important to keep writing, especially at first. Don't even stop to make corrections and hamper your flow of ideas. You should also write in a quiet place, where you can concentrate on saying what you mean and avoiding ambiguity.
-
Seek approval. Sometimes it is difficult to seek and accept criticism, but it is important to do so with your college essays. You should have a teacher and/or a parent look at your work before you send it off. If there are criticisms, go back and revise. Sometimes you are so close to your work that you cannot "see or hear" meanings that may be detract from the clarity and forcefulness of your message.
There are several books and pamphlets on how to write essays, and there are books of sample essays. College Center has them all, plus a world of experience in reading and evaluating essays. Call College Center for help and advice.
