The key to a successful application is making the match between yourself and the college or university to which you are applying. Without being artificial, you should try to connect yourself and your interests to the courses, programs, extracurricular activities, and culture of the college. You should try to "see" yourself at the school. What would you be doing on a given day? What courses would you be taking? What activities would you be pursuing? What kinds of people would you be seeking out?
Many schools' application forms will have short essay topics that will enable you to make the match for them. Others will not, and you may want to write a supplementary essay saying why you want to go to that particular college or university. Or you may wish to submit a sample of your artistic or scientific talent that would be of interest to that college.
